Everything You Need to Know About Nicotine Salts
- 14 Jan, 2019
One of the things we love most about the vaping industry is that it’s constantly evolving. Not a day goes by that we don’t hear about a new innovation or start stocking an exciting new product. The latest thing that’s causing a buzz is nicotine salt. Wondering what we’re on about? You’re in the right place.
Can I sprinkle nicotine salt on my super-scrumptious pasta bake?
Heck no. Don’t let the name fool you. Nicotine salt definitely isn't the same thing you add to your cheesy chips at the end of the night (we've all been there).
Nicotine salts are what’s created when you mix a pure nicotine base with particular types of acid. Essentially, ‘nicotine salts’ describes a chemical reaction. It’s a phrase to identify the process rather than what it actually is. Sciencey.
Nicotine salts exist naturally in tobacco. So if you’re thinking a mixture of salt and acid sounds worse than pure nicotine - you’re wrong. Sorry not sorry.
Are nicotine salts better than nicotine?
We don’t want to sound like your nan, but basically no nicotine is good for you. However, if you’re looking to cut back (or eventually cut it out all together) nicotine salt might just be the solution you've been searching for.
If you've previously been a heavy smoker, switching to vaping cold turkey doesn't always give you that instant relief you crave. Again, this is where the science comes in.
Nicotine is extracted from tobacco. During the process all the impurities are removed, leaving you with nicotine in its purest form. This is the nicotine you’ll find in pretty much every e-liquid out there.
What you might not realise is that nicotine has a mega-high PH rating (the system that measures how acidic a substance is). When you inhale substances with a high PH rating it’s your throat that takes the hit. The higher the strength of the nicotine, the harsher it is on your throat. Ouch.
Nicotine salt is different. Because it’s created through a strategic infusion of acid, the PH balance is reduced. What this means is that by switching to salts, you can vape higher concentrations of nicotine without giving your throat a rough time. It also enters the bloodstream quicker, mimicking the effect of smoking a real cigarette.
This can help you ditch the fags and phase out your use of nicotine in a time frame that suits you - with less withdrawal symptoms because of the stronger hit. So you’ll have to find another excuse to be grumpy with your other half.
But there’s got to be some drawbacks, right?
Short answer? Yep. If you aren't a heavy smoker, you probably aren't going to have as much fun with nicotine salts as you would experimenting with flavoured e-juices.
Nicotine salts are designed to imitate the experience of a real cigarette. You could say salts are more subtle, while e-juices are a little more on the exciting side. And if you aren't used to a higher dose of nicotine, you’ll experience all the yucky side effects associated with smoking.
At the moment, nicotine salts are on the pricier side and can only be used in pods and pens. So it’s worth considering any changes you need to make if you want to give them a whirl. If you’re happy with your current budget, device and juices, there’s no need to jump on the bandwagon.
The Gourmet eLiquid verdict
What do we think? If you’re a smoker looking for a way out, nicotine salts are absolutely for you. They might cost a little more, but the higher dose of nicotine, longer-lasting buzz and smooth feel sells it for us every time.
Happy creating clouds, choosing flavours and simply being a part of the vaping community? It’s probably not worth making the switch - especially if you aren't used to nicotine. Then again experimenting is what this industry is all about. If you want to give them a try, go for it. As always, remember that safety comes first - take your time, start with a small dosage and only increase it if feels right. Oh, and don’t forget to tweet us if you need any advice.
