Shortfill e-liquids are a popular way to buy larger volumes of e-liquid without nicotine. In the UK, regulations limit nicotine-containing e-liquid to 10ml bottles, so shortfills became the go-to option for vapers who want bigger bottles and the flexibility to add nicotine shots separately.

“Shortfill” simply means the bottle is filled short, leaving space to add nic shots and keep everything in one bottle.

How do nicotine shots work with shortfills?

Most shortfills are designed so you can add one or more 10ml nicotine shots to reach a common strength. The exact result depends on:

  • the shortfill volume (e.g., 50ml/100ml/200ml),
  • the bottle size (how much space is left),
  • the nic shot strength (commonly 18mg or 20mg).

Typical examples (using one 10ml 18mg nic shot):

  • 50ml shortfill + 1× 10ml 18mg shot = ~3mg (60ml total)
  • 100ml shortfill + 2× 10ml 18mg shots = ~3mg (120ml total)
  • 200ml shortfill + 4× 10ml 18mg shots = ~3mg (240ml total)

Note on 6mg: Some shortfills are made specifically to reach ~6mg (for example, 40ml in a 60ml bottle with 2 shots). If you’re aiming for 6mg, it’s best to check the bottle size/space on the product page.

Which VG/PG ratio should I choose?
  • 70VG/30PG (High VG) - thicker, bigger vapour, best for sub-ohm tanks and higher wattage.
  • 50VG/50PG - thinner, often better in pods and lower-wattage kits (and can give a sharper throat hit).
